Police take measurements at the scene where a callous hit-and-run driver struck a family, killing a 4-year-old boy, and then sped away in southern Staten Island. The truck is parked and was not involved in the crime.
A hit-and-run driver mowed down a mother and her two young children in Staten Island last night, killing a 4-year-old boy, authorities said.
The family was hit by a black Mercedes SUV with tinted windows as they crossed Richmond Road near Newberry Avenue at about 10:25 p.m. The driver had just pulled out of Diddle Dee Bagel & Deli when he hit Kyrillos Gendy, 4, of South Amboy, NJ, his mother, 34, and older sister, 7, and then heartlessly sped away, cops said.
"The mother was scared, she was holding her son," said deli owner Mahmoud Odeh, 47, who helped the mother cradle the dying boy until help arrived. "He was bleeding from the nose, the mouth, and not moving. She was praying loudly."
Odeh said the family was visiting another family who lived in a house near his deli.
The boy had severe head trauma and was declared dead at Staten Island University Hospital. "We resuscitated him twice. He's alive, but barely alive," a hospital employee said before little Kyrillos died. His mother and sister had minor injuries.
