INSIDE THE MATCHUPS

YANKEES: The enigmatic Nova, 26, is making just his second start of the season. His first outing was a 4 2/3-inning plod in Detroit, where he allowed four runs on five hits and two walks. He is 4-1 with a 2.94 ERA lifetime against NL opponents.

D'BACKS: McCarthy's 2012 season with the A's ended in early September when he was struck in the head by a line drive and suffered a fractured skull. He signed with Arizona and struggled in his first two starts at hitter-friendly Chase Field, allowing 19 hits in 112/3 innings.

STAT SO?

YANKEES: The team is 5-3 when Francisco Cervelli starts at catcher and 1-2 when Chris Stewart starts.

D'BACKS: Through 12 games, Justin Upton had a NL-best seven homers and 1.306 OPS for the Braves while Arizona's replacements in right field had a cumulative three homers and robust .928 OPS.
